Start the holiday season with a bit of tradition. This weekend Middleburg turns its quaint town into a scene imagined by Charles Dickens himself. The weekend hosts all the Christmas cheer with a tree lighting and holiday recital (Dec. 4), caroling, breakfast with Santa, a craft fair and the regal parade of hounds and horses down Washington Street (Dec. 5). For adults, there is an afternoon Wine Crawl with progressive foods, ciders and spirits. And for the entire family, choristers from The Middleburg Community Charter School, Violin Duet, The Intrepid Jazz Trio and The Powhatan Violin Ensemble will perform at the Middleburg Methodist Church following their 11:30 a.m. soup and ham biscuit lunch. Wrapping up the weekend is a free Christmas pageant at Foxcroft School (Dec. 6).

While you’re there make sure to stop in:

Middleburg Common Grounds for hot pick-me-up of java and a bite to eat. There is plenty of fare to choose from—half-smoked sausage, slow-roasted turkey, homemade citrus chicken, prime roast beef and more—plus a full caffeine bar. / 114 W. Washington St.

The Christmas Sleigh for authentic Steinbach nutcrackers. Walking into this shop is like walking into Santa’s workshop. From the delicate ornaments and Schaller papier-maches to the intricate marionettes and German attire, shoppers will no doubt walk out wanting to deck out their homes in the traditions of a German Christmas. / 5 E. Washington St.

The Byrne Gallery to get inspired by local contemporary artists through their work in oils, glass and jewelry. The gallery also holds true to the aesthetic of Middleburg by carrying antique art as well. / 7 W. Washington St.

Red Fox Inn and Tavern to get the feel for what Middleburg once was, as the tavern has been in existence since 1728. Inspired by its 18th-century roots, the menu pulls from hearty dishes while keeping in the tradition of seasonal fare sourced from area farms in a setting of oak tables, stone fireplaces and fieldstone walls. / 2 E. Washington St.

Foxfire Gallery & Antiques to pick up gorgeous pieces to remake your home in the tone of European elegance. For a little over two years, Foxfire has beckoned shoppers in from the brick pathways to a sunlit store filled with opulent pieces of furniture, tapestries, crystal chandeliers, greenery and decorative pieces. / 7 E. Washington St.
