About once every two months, Garrett Peck, the capital area’s leading expert on beer, and Catherine Portner, of the upcoming Portner brewery, guide tourists and locals alike through 2.5 miles of delicious beer history in Old Town. For $20, tourgoers can visit some of the oldest breweries in the U.S., including Andrew Wales Brewery, which kicked off the local beer industry in the late 1700s. Many of the tour’s stops are featured in the brochure “Alexandria’s Historic Breweries: A Walking Tour & Pub Guide,” available at the Alexandria Visitor Center, which Peck also helped write. –RLS / garrettpeck.com
