The call is out. The Purcellville Cannons need people to open their homes and host the amateur league players for the season.
The team is struggling to find enough families, the coach tells Loudoun Now. The team’s website said that without adequate housing, the “Cannons can’t attract talented players from across the United States” to play at Fireman’s Field in Purcellville. This year, the roster includes players from as far away as Japan.
Here’s what the host families page said is needed: “Their needs are relatively simple: a private room, access to a bathroom and a laundry room (they’ll need to use showers and laundry facilities daily), two square meals a day, and a family to cheer them on.”
The players who are in college often have summer jobs and play at night, usually six games a week. Host families are not expected to shuttle the players around. Some will have cars, and others will rely on teammates for rides.
The housing is needed from the end of May until early August. But, if the team doesn’t make the playoffs for the Valley Baseball League, the players would leave by July 26.
The team plays its first game at home on Friday, May 31.
People interested in hosting a player or more than one should contact housing coordinator Jill Solano at cannonshostfamily@gmail.com.
