5 fitness events that will get you outside this weekend

Opt outside and trade in your gym routine with a hike, walk, or golf outing around NoVA.

By Michele Kettner March 30, 2021 at 11:50 am

With this weekend marking the beginning of April, it’s officially time to get outside. Instead of running on the treadmill or riding your Peloton, bring your workouts to the Great Outdoors by joining a hike, 5K, or kayak adventure this weekend.

Hike with a Naturalist

Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon
With the region starting to bloom, it’s the perfect time to take in the scenery. Block off your Thursday morning and spend it with a local naturalist around the Bull Run Mountains. The group will discover the different flora and fauna the area has to offer while on their hike. // Leopold’s Preserve: 16290 Thoroughfare Rd., Broad Run; free

2021 Earth Day Challenge Run/Walk

Thursday through April 30
Join runners from around the region and world to see how many times you can run around the Earth as a group. The third annual virtual challenge brings runners together to try to run the distance of the equator (24,901 miles!). Runners will also receive some swag, including a commemorative medal, stainless-steel straws, and a pack of wildflower seeds. // $35-$45

PVTC Easter Classic 5K and 10K

Saturday, 8-9:30 a.m.
Kick off Easter weekend with a community run. Enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery of Four Mile Run Trail as you run or walk the trail. All runners will receive a Potomac Valley Track Club face mask, with group winners receiving Easter lilies. // Bluemont Park: 329 N. Manchester St., Arlington; $20

Two-Person Best Ball Tournament

Saturday, 10 a.m.
Dust off the golf clubs and grab your best friend for a morning on the course. The nine-hole stroke-play tournament will follow the best-ball format. Prizes will be awarded to the best teams of the day. // Jefferson Golf Course: 7900 Lee Hwy., Falls Church; $70 per team

Sunset Kayak Paddle

Saturday, 5:30-8 p.m.
Spend the evening before Easter out on the water. Join a paddling instructor for a tour of the calm waters and scenery at sunset. While previous kayak experience is suggested, it is not required to join. // Pohick Bay Regional Park: 6501 Pohick Bay Dr., Lorton; $35
