Working out at home is on the rise. Here’s why.

In Virginia and the rest of the United States, fitness equipment sales have skyrocketed compared to last year, according to recently released data.

It’s no secret that stay-at-home orders caused by the coronavirus this past spring led many to take on new hobbies, ranging from baking bread to taking online courses to creating a daily fitness regimen. The latter has proven to be extremely common as typical gym-goers were forced to modify their workout routines to function within the home, according to recent data tracking the online sales of fitness equipment from this past spring.

The eBay sales data, compiled by London-based SEO agency Type A Media, reveals that in the United States, from March 30 to June 10, sales for items like dumbbells, weight plates, kettlebells, pull-up bars and power racks increased by over 1,000% compared to numbers from 2019, with dumbbell sales increasing the most at 5,892%.

Plus, in Virginia specifically, by the end of May, there had been a 65% increase in fitness equipment sales since the start of the coronavirus stay-at-home order at the end of March.

By far, the most purchased item of fitness enthusiasts across the country is dumbbells. And, according to the data, Virginia has taken part in the trend, landing as the No. 10 state with the highest increase in online fitness sales. The No. 1 state with the highest increase in sales from March to April is New Hampshire.

While fitness studios of all kinds are now open once again, the data reveals that at-home workouts may be a way of the future.
