7 virtual health events to participate in this month

Your health is important, now more than ever. Here, find at-home wellness events focusing on fitness, mental health and nutrition.

Gyms are still closed and 5Ks and wellness events have either been postponed or canceled for the foreseeable future. If you’re missing your regular workout and wellness routines (and are tired of working out in your living room), it may be time to find fun virtual events to participate in.

Below, find seven virtual events happening throughout May, focusing on everything you need to stay healthy during the month.

Monday Movement Yoga
Every Monday, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
During COVID-19, remember to inhale and exhale, especially on those tough back-to-work Mondays. These weekly virtual Zoom yoga classes focus on gentle movements and easy flows to warm the body and to provide relaxation and more flexibility. // $20

Holy Fire III Reiki Master/Advanced Reiki Training on Zoom
Saturday, May 16-Monday, May 18, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Interested in becoming a reiki practitioner? This three-day, virtual seminar will take your training to the next level and will result in a certification as a Holy Fire III specialist. This session is for reiki practitioners currently working at the secondary level with clients. // $895   

HOPE for Mental Health Virtual Meeting
Monday, May 18, 7-8:30 p.m.
HOPE for Mental Health is a peer-led support group for adults that usually meets at Centreville Presbyterian Church. During the pandemic, the group has shifted to virtual meetings, helping those supporting family members and friends facing mental health challenges. Meetings are being held via Zoom on the first and third Monday of every month. // free 

Virtual Meet the Doulas
Sunday, May 31, noon-1 p.m.
Alexandria’s Momease is now offering conference calls for clients, and this digital session will focus on discussing labor warning signs, techniques to labor at home, creating realistic birth plans during COVID-19, preparing partners to provide comfort measures and more. // $55 an hour

Backyard Pharmacy Live Virtual Class
Sunday, May 31, 3-5 p.m.
Learn how to harvest common backyard and field plants that can be incorporated into your wellness practice with this class from Geo’s Garden. The live session will introduce participants to plants and will teach how to harvest them properly for use. // $40

The St. James Virtual 5K & 10K
Sunday, May 31
A race for all ages and abilities, The St. James is hosting its virtual 5K and 10K to encourage community members to stay active, and to support Medstar Health and its COVID-19 Critical Needs Fund, which helps local hospitals and services related to the pandemic. In addition to the race, The St. James Director of Product Development Kevin Mullins will also provide race participants with a training plan that includes cardio, strength, mobility and nutrition to help maximize the experience. // $12-$22

Virginia Marathon
Through Sunday, May 31
The Virginia Marathon, typically held along the Fairfax County Cross County Trail, has been moved to a virtual race. Runners have the whole month of May to run the route and must wear a device that can create a .gpx file to submit race details. The traditional course race, which is still open for locals to run on, starts at Lake Accotink Park and travels through scenic, tree-lined paths with a mixture of paved, gravel and dirt trails. // contact directly for pricing
