There is so much you can do on spring break. Why not try day trips? Here are four places — three in NoVA and one south of Richmond — where you can have an adventure and make some memories.
Fredericksburg
Visit Historic Kenmore and George Washington’s Ferry Farm
George Washington’s Ferry Farm and the historic Kenmore mansion are owned and operated by the George Washington Foundation. Take a guided tour of where Washington lived or where his sister lived. The farm often hosts family-friendly events. March 23 marks Girl Scout Day, where Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts can participate in activities, learning about Washington’s traditional dance lessons, or the science and math classes he took to complete to predict the weather and tell time. There’s also a Colonial Fair on April 6 with magic, games, and puppetry. You can bring your pup along on April 13 for Dog Days at Ferry Farm. 1201 Washington Ave. (Kenmore) and 268 Kings Hwy. (Ferry Farm), Fredericksburg
Grab Pizza at Benny’s
Benny Vitali’s is a great place to stop to refuel the family. It’s just a six-minute drive from Historic Kenmore and the pizza slices are so big that you’ll need two plates for just one piece of a pie. Their garlic dipping sauce is a delicious extra boost of flavor and worth paying the extra 50 cents for a cup. 722 Caroline St., Fredericksburg
Middleburg
Visit The National Sporting Library and Museum
Grab a group of family members or friends and head to Middleburg’s National Sporting Library and Museum to learn about steeplechasing, polo, and other hunt country sports. Tours can be customized and must be scheduled a week in advance. Children can take part in interactive and hands-on activities. 102 The Plains Rd., Middleburg
Have a Treat at The Upper Crust
After the museum, head to this bakery that’s a block away. The eatery sells croissants, cookies, pies, eclairs, and other sweets great for an afternoon pick-me-up. 2 Pendleton St., Middleburg
Prince George
Visit Tree Time Adventures
If the kids have spring fever and are eagerly waiting to get out and enjoy the warmer weather, Tree Time Adventures has four treetop adventure courses and a stand-alone zipline. There are eight different ziplines, two nature trails, and nearly 60 obstacle bridges. It is advised to book a slot before you visit. Bookings allow groups to do as many courses as they’d like to complete within their designated timeframe. Keep in mind, some courses may not be suitable for all guests based on height, weight, or physical fitness level. 6680 Courthouse Rd., Prince George
Have Lunch at Morelia Mexican Restaurant
Just minutes from Tree Time Adventures is Morelia Mexican Restaurant. Its lunch menu includes 30 different options (like tacos, burritos, or chalupas). The kids’ menu offers a taco, tostada, tamale, burrito, or quesadilla. For picky little ones, they can choose a grilled cheese sandwich, chicken nuggets, or a cheeseburger. 6619 Courthouse Rd., Prince George
Purcellville
Visit the Chapman DeMary Trail
Purcellville’s Chapman DeMary Trail is a 10-acre area with a 1-mile trail that runs along the South Fork Catoctin Creek. The trail is named after John Chapman and John DeMary. Chapman offered to open the area to be used as a nature trail and outdoor classroom. DeMary, a retired Loudoun Valley High School teacher, encouraged students to present their vision for it to the town council. Students and scouts have been involved with turning the area into the lush park it is today. 355 N. Hatcher Ave., Purcellville
Try Market Burger, Fries & Shakes
Grab a burger and shake at Market Burger, Fries & Shakes after you explore the trail. The rich and creamy milkshakes are made with Walnut Hill milk and Tillamook vanilla bean ice cream. You can’t go wrong with the Market Burger either. It’s made with a local beef patty, cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, and a Fairbrook Farm egg. 145 W. Main St., Purcellville
