This spring, Segra Field in Leesburg won’t just be just for soccer anymore. Starting in March, the home of Loudoun United FC will also be home to Old Glory DC, the region’s professional rugby team.
The rugby team will be moving from Catholic University’s Cardinal Stadium in Washington, DC to Leesburg for the start of the 2021 Major League Rugby season. The upcoming season is slated to start March 20, as 13 teams compete for 18 weeks of regular-season action. The championship game will be on Aug. 1 on CBS.
“As we introduce new fans in our area to rugby, it is so important that we present the game in its pure form and in a truly professional venue that allows for our family-friendly, fan-first match day style,” said Old Glory Chairman, Chris Dunlavey in a recent press release. “Segra Field is simply beautiful. Our players and coaches are already in love with the field and support facilities, and it is only a matter of time until our supporters feel the same way about the venue and its surroundings.”
Old Glory is set to host eight home matches during its first season at Segra, all of which will be played on either a Saturday or Sunday. Fans who are thinking about attending a game in Leesburg can also expect a larger space for tailgating, a beer garden and a kids play zone.
While the 2021 season is still some months away, the team is already monitoring the Centers for Disease Control and Virginia health guidelines when it comes to making a decision on allowing supporters access to the venue for upcoming matches.
The team will host an open house at the stadium on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this time, fans will be able to view the new facility, scout seats for the upcoming season and learn more about the game of rugby. Season tickets for the upcoming season will be on sale starting Nov. 16 for the OG Club, Nov. 20 for 2020 season ticket holders and Nov. 30 for the public. // Segra Field: 42905 Loudoun United Drive, Leesburg
