So we don’t have the hometown team stadiums within our borders. That doesn’t mean you can’t see them in action right in your own backyard.
Redskins Park in Ashburn
The team plays home games at FedEx field in Landover, Maryland, but they train here. And the great part about that for Northern Virginians, aside from possibly bumping into a player at a local grocery store or catching them at a restaurant—maybe even the new Redskins-themed Hail & Hog Kitchen and Tap in One Loudoun—is that we get to see them in action during some preseason practices that are open to the public. A couple of years ago the team moved the official training camp to Richmond at Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center, but they still open up some practices at the Ashburn facility.
Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington
Who would have thought the place the reigning Presidents’ Trophy winners practice is within a mall—actually, it’s atop the Ballston Common Mall parking garage. This is where you’ll find Kettler Capitals Iceplex, where the Washington Capitals hockey team practices, and you can watch for free.
Potomac Nationals in Woodbridge
We are lucky to have two teams for our nation’s pastime. The MLB Washington Nationals play out of Nats Park in southeast D.C.—not too far of a drive—but the Class A Advanced affiliate, The Potomac Nationals, are right here in Northern Virginia at G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge. The current leaders in the Carolina League Northern division provide a great opportunity for a family night out with ticket prices being on the lower end ($9-$16) than other sporting events and lots of promotions happening throughout the season ($1 Mondays, $2 Tuesdays, 4X4 Friday Family Packs and more).
