8 Free Things to Do in Northern Virginia in June

Looking for a day of family fun or a low-cost date? Check out these free activities.

From summer movie nights to playing all day to commemorate the summer solstice in Northern Virginia, consider these free events and activities to try this month.

Innovations in Flight

June 14, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly. There will be over 50 aircraft flown in specifically for the event, and pilots will be on hand to chat about both historic and modern planes. Inside the museum, there will be family activities and more trailblazers of flight on hand for discussions. Parking is $15. 14390 Air and Space Museum Pkwy., Chantilly

Summer Movie Night – The Princess Bride

June 14, 8 p.m.

The Eileen Garnett Civic Space movie night will feature the 1987 film The Princess Bride. Blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics are welcome. The movie begins at 8 p.m., and doors open at 7:30 p.m. 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale

Father’s Day Kids and Family Festival

June 15, 12–6 p.m.

Celebrate Father’s Day with this family (and dog) friendly event. There will be free face painting, arts and crafts, a moon bounce, and outdoor playground too. There will also be “Daddy and Me” competitions for dads and kids to participate in. 7581 Colshire Dr., McLean

Just a Walk: A Free Peek at Meadowlark

June 17 and 24, 10:15–11:15 a.m.

Check out Meadowlark’s 95 acres with free garden admission and a guided walk. The walk will last approximately one hour and include a silent, meditative portion. The event is for those ages 18 and up; no reservations are required. 9750 Meadowlark Gardens Ct., Vienna

Juneteenth Celebration at Sully Historic Site

June 19, 10 a.m.–2 p.m.

The commemoration of emancipation will include storytelling, family activities, and more. There will also be tours of the site. Note: The event is free, but registration is recommended. 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly

Play All Day VA

June 20, 8 a.m.–6 p.m.

Celebrate the longest day of the year with free recreational activities all day. Prince William County Parks and Recreation and the Virginia Recreation and Park Society will host “Play All Day.” Expect an adaptive splash and play, family “Bingocize,” and story time and STEM activities. “Spotlight by Starlight” at Mason District Park with the City of Fairfax Band

June 20, 7:30–8:30 p.m.

The City of Fairfax Band will perform classic wind band music at Mason District Park in Annandale. The concert is part of Fairfax County’s summer entertainment series Spotlight by Starlight concerts. 6621 Columbia Pike, Annandale

Spotsylvania Stars & Stripes Spectacular!

June 28, 4–10 p.m., rain date is June 29

Spotsylvania County hosts a yearly “Stars & Stripes Spectacular” on the Saturday before July 4. The free festival will feature food vendors, live music, historical tours, and of course a fireworks display at the end of the night (9:20 p.m. to be exact). 9111 Courthouse Rd., Spotsylvania Courthouse
