National Gallery Nights, a popular after-hours event series at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, is back with new dates this spring.
On the second Thursday of March, April, and May from 6 to 9 p.m., visitors will be welcomed into the museum for an evening of art, live music, and crafting. The event is free, but tickets are in high demand.
Because National Gallery Nights have been so popular in the past, the Smithsonian uses a lottery system to distribute tickets. During the week before each event, the lottery will open on Monday and close on Thursday. Those selected to receive tickets will be notified on the Friday before the event. There are also a limited number of tickets available day-of at the door.
Light fare, gelato, beer, wine, and cocktails are available for purchase throughout each evening.
Here’s what to expect from this season.
Revolutionary Women
March 13, 6-9 p.m.
Guests will enjoy three hours of after-hours access to the gallery’s new exhibit of Elizabeth Catlett’s works. There will be a printmaking station for guests to make their own art, and music from The Legendary Ingrammettes and DJ Chan Don.
Reduce, Reuse, Remix
April 10, 6-9 p.m.
It’s all about sustainability at this event. There will be locals artists “forging new paths to sustainability,” plus a chance to make your own art with recycled materials. View the works of Chakaia Booker, who creates sculptures out of industrial waste, and enjoy music from DJ Les Talusen.
70s Disco Prom
May 8, 6-9 p.m.
Get groovy by wearing your best 1970s-inspired outfit. There will be music from DJ Farrah Flosscett, an arts and crafts station, and the chance to view artworks from throughout the decade.
