Updated April 15, 2022. The Historic Garden Week in Virginia is back. Slated for April 23-30, this year the historic tours will feature more than 100 private and public gardens and landscapes throughout the state. Luckily for us, many of those historic tours will take place throughout Northern Virginia.
Old Town Alexandria
April 23
Take in the gardens at your own pace with the self-guided walking tour in Old Town. With five properties, the tour centers on the Historic District (Alexandria was the third city in the country to create one). The tour will feature a variety of floral arrangements as you check out private homes and secluded gardens.
Winchester
April 23
A scenic tour of the oldest city west of the Blue Ridge Mountains awaits in the Shenandoah Valley. Tourgoers can expect to visit four properties throughout Frederick County, including former Civil War hospitals La Grange House and Valerie Hill Winery. Intertwined with the historic ambience of these properties are the beautiful gardens, walking trails, and 18- and 19th-century architecture that will definitely be the highlight of your tour.
Leesburg
April 24 & 25
The Old and Historic District of Leesburg is full of charm. From restored gardens to 17th-century Federal-style homes, this walking tour will take you back in time as you explore St. James’ Episcopal Church and private residences that are definitely considered hidden gems in NoVA.
Fairfax
April 26
Combine history with rural opulence, and you’re often going to end up with some visually interesting gardens. Fairfax has both. During this driving tour, you’ll head out to a log cabin, an estate that’s certified as an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary due its bird-friendly gardens, and city-proper homes whose property hearkens back to the Civil War.
Fredericksburg
April 26
This completely outdoor tour will take guests through historic downtown. The Fredericksburg itinerary includes five different private gardens. Guests will also be amazed at the public floral decorations, demonstrations, and gardening exhibits along the way (there’s even a free trolley ride through town).
