5 virtual and in-person parks and rec events to join this weekend

Whether you want to take a hike outside or have your kids enjoy some STEAM activities, these activities have you covered.

Whether you want to venture outdoors or stay cozy inside, there are plenty of ways to connect with nature. From a twilight tour to a virtual lesson on Prince William County during the industrial boom, here are the parks and recreation events you should try this weekend.

Twilight Hilltop Tour

Friday, 4:45 p.m.
After a long week, head to the stars for some relaxation. Explore the grounds of Historic Huntley and take in the sunset overlooking Hybla Valley and Huntley Meadows Park. Light refreshments will be served at the end of the program. // Huntley Meadows: 3701 Lockheed Blvd., Alexandria; $8

Paint, Build, Create!

Saturday, 10-11 a.m.
Show off your creative side with the annual Paint, Build, Create event. This virtual experience will allow participants to engage in different STEAM activities of their choice. Most of the activities will use common items from around the house. // free

Hidden Pond Winter Exploration

Saturday, 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. & 1 p.m.
Go on an adventure with the family at Hidden Pond Nature Center. Explore the center as you discuss how winter affects different aspects of the park. Reservations are required for the one-hour program. // Hidden Pond Nature Center: 8511 Greeley Blvd., Springfield; $40 per family

Prince William County During the Gilded Age Virtual Presentation

Saturday, 5 p.m.
Learn about the history of Prince William County by traveling back to the Gilded Age. Join historic interpreter Warwick Steer to see how the county welcomed industrialization during the late 19th century and changed from there. // free, donations accepted

Virtual What’s Living Under The Ice

Sunday, 10-10:30 a.m.
Have your curious little ones ever asked you what happens to the animals when the water freezes? Take a virtual field trip with a naturalist to see what happens to those fish and other underwater creatures once winter rolls around. Registration is required. // free
