This year marks the 19th anniversary of the attacks on 9/11. While the day is usually filled with observances, this year many annual events have been postponed. But there are still ways to observe Patriot Day, whether virtually or socially distanced. Here are five ways to honor those heroes and loved ones lost.
2020 Virtual 9/11 Promise Run or Ride
Wednesday, Sept. 9 through Friday, Sept. 11
Established during the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the 9.11-mile run/bike ride remembers and honors first responders and military personnel for their daily sacrifice. Donations from the event will go toward scholarships that will be awarded to children of fallen or injured first responders and military service members. // donations accepted
Patriot Day Flag Placement and Ceremony
Thursday, Sept. 10 & Friday, Sept. 11, times vary
Visit Lovettsville to remember and honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 at the town’s Patriot Day Ceremony. This observance will include multiple moments of silence throughout the reflection. Residents can come to the Veteran’s Memorial the night before the ceremony to help place the 2,977 flags around the square to honor those individuals lost. // The Town of Lovettsville: 6 E. The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Patriot Day Ceremony
Friday, Sept. 11, 7 p.m.
Join the Virginia War Memorial Foundation for a virtual remembrance for Patriot Day. War Memorial Director Dr. Clay Mountcastle will provide remarks with a moment of silence for those killed during the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the airplane crash in Pennsylvania. // free
Roanoke 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb (Virtual and In-Person)
Friday, Sept. 11 & Saturday, Sept. 12, times vary
Honor the first responders who lost their lives while trying to help others with the 9/11 memorial stair climb. Sign up for an in-person or virtual climb of 110 stories, which is equivalent to the World Trade Center. Virtual 19th Annual Arlington Police, Fire & Sheriff 9/11 Memorial 5K
Saturday, Sept. 12
The annual Arlington 9/11 race is going virtual. Help out a good cause and keep the annual tradition alive by running a 5K around your neighborhood. Funds from the race will be donated to the Pentagon Memorial Fund and HEROES. // $30
