After years of planning, construction is about to start on the new Lorton Community Center and Lorton Library. Excited about the news? You can celebrate these future community buildings in-person at the groundbreaking ceremony for the community center and library this weekend.
The ceremony take place on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. at 9520 Richmond Highway, Lorton, which is across from Lorton Park. Limited parking will be available at the Moose Family Center.
Multiple people will be speaking at the event about the future community center and library. Some notable figures include Mount Vernon District Supervisor Daniel G. Storck, Deputy County Executive Rachel Flynn and Neighborhood and Community Services Director Chris Leonard.
While the event will take place in Lorton, there will also be a few virtual options for those who would like to watch from home. Fairfax County Government Channel 1016 (Cox) and Channel 16 (Verizon/Comcast) will be televising the event. There will also be a livestream on the Fairfax County website and on Facebook.
The new Lorton Community Center and Library will provide residents with numerous programs and activities for all ages. The new buildings will include a gymnasium/fitness room, game/art room, playground and an expanded library selection.
Fairfax County voters approved the community center back in November 2016, while the library renovation was approved in fall 2019. The Lorton Library has been closed to the public since April 11 for renovations, which are expected to take at least 21 months to complete.
