‘Funny Women of a Certain Age’ takes the stage at The Birchmere this summer

The all-female comedy show features comics over the age of 50, who make jokes about what it’s like to be a woman of “a certain age.”

Anyone over 50 knows the joys and pains of getting older, and no one wants to make you laugh about those pros and cons more than the all-female cast of Funny Women of a Certain Age. Originally premiered on Showtime, the comedy special is heading to The Birchmere on Sunday, June 9.

Starting at 7:30 p.m., the show will feature women comics who have seen it all in their careers, and who aren’t afraid to speak about it—all with humor, of course. The cast for the show at The Birchmere includes Carole Montgomery (the creator and host of Funny Women of a Certain Age), Vanessa Hollingshead and Kerri Louise.

The Showtime special was the first television comedy special to feature six female comics all over the age of 50, and was headlined by lovable Fran Drescher (known for her role on The Nanny), and also featured Luenell and Lynne Koplitz, as well as the three women taking the stage at The Birchmere event.

Topics will include sexism, ageism, life as a female comedian and other themes relatable to women “of a certain age,” like menopause, changing body shape, sex, the never-ending cycle of using anti-wrinkle and other self-maintenance products and even cancer.

Funny Women of a Certain Age demonstrates the highs and lows of aging, but above all, the show proves that comedy never gets old.

For example, in the Showtime version of Funny Women of a Certain Age, Drescher discusses dating a younger man, who thought her estrogen patch was a nicotine patch: “What’s more of a turnoff? Smoking, or menopause?”
