Newly elected members of Congress and the Senate arrive in D.C. this month in what has become a heated, partisan environment with constant swiping and name calling at people on opposite ends of the political spectrum. That won’t be the case for Heather McDonald though.

“I really don’t get political,” the comedian says, “I just want my show to be an escape … and people from the right and left can come together and just laugh about stuff in pop culture and reality shows, dating, relationships, family.”

McDonald, who will make her Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse debut this month, is known for her podcast Juicy Scoop that releases a new episode twice a week and reached 300 episodes in December. The podcast covers what McDonald describes as “juicy or intriguing” topics, whether it be pop culture, her personal life or, occasionally, something from the news.

It’s given fans a better chance to know her and for her to establish a stronger connection with them, something she sees the benefits of when she hits the road to perform her stand-up.

“It really is so much fun,” McDonald describes taking the stage. “When I started stand-up I dreamed that I could have my own shows and that people would fill them up, so I never want to complain about it and I’m always really grateful for every experience.” // Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse: 2903 Columbia Pike, Arlington; arlingtondrafthouse.com; $25-$55
