For most NoVA residents, the name Luray is almost exclusively connected to the word “caverns.” While Luray Caverns is a spectacular natural wonder located just outside of town, there is much more to Luray than just stalagmites.
However, from July 31-Aug. 3 the quaint, scenic town of Luray lights up with the presence of the third annual Doah Fest. The Doah Fest is unlike any other; it takes place on an enormous rural farm and not only centers on the excitement of music but also the community. It capitalizes on the uninterrupted peace the Luray countryside has to offer.
The town itself is situated within throwing distance of the Shenandoah National Park, the scenic Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Mountains. For an outdoor adventure seeker, Luray is ideal. You can camp, canoe, golf, ride horses, hike or just marvel at the scenery, and there is also no shortage of small-town charm. In the town center you’ll find local artists, musicians, restaurants and unique shops to look through.
How to get there
From Fairfax City to Luray, the ride is only 1 hour and 40 minutes. Once you get through the gridlock, you can expect nothing but gorgeous scenery.
The Doah Fest
Music, river-floating and yoga are only a few of the things that the Doah Fest offers. When it comes to music, there is someone performing from almost every genre. A few of the performers include Moogatu, The Strange Heat and Electric Love Machine.

The Doah Fest also features a nightly community bonfire, free yoga sessions in the morning and a silent disco. You can swim in a refreshing river while listening to great music or enjoy unique and creative visual arts installments—all without leaving the farm. This festival promises several days of being “unplugged and connected.”

What to do in Luray
When you’re ready to head off the farm and explore what Luray has to offer, you won’t be disappointed. Of course, a stop by Luray Caverns is essential.
Then, you’d be remiss if you didn’t get a little outdoor adventuring in. Just a few of your options for outdoor recreation include the Rope Adventure Park at Luray Caverns, Shenandoah River Adventures L.L.C, Page Valley Fly Fishing Service and Bear Mountain Adventure zip lining.

More than anything, Luray is for relaxing and enjoying the small-town lifestyle, even just for the weekend. The town itself has been taking it easy since it was founded in 1812, so just walk around the historic streets, check out the local businesses, float down the river and relax.
