We surveyed more than 4,000 doctors and seven hospitals asking them to nominate who they think is the best plastic surgeon in Northern Virginia. Bruno set out to be a dentist, but became interested in surgery and instead became an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. During that training, he was exposed to plastic surgery. “My eyes were just wide open like ‘Wow. This is amazing.’” Not only does he get to work from head to toe on patients who want to both look good and feel good, he also likes to do reconstructive surgeries for accident victims, cancer survivors and those with disfigurements. “It is a pretty unique profession,” says Bruno, who went to medical school at University of Pennsylvania and trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He enjoys getting big smiles and hugs from his grateful patients. “That is really rewarding.”

With a love of the sciences and medicine, Duda started as a biomedical engineer. Earning a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from University of Miami, she chose medicine over research because she enjoyed patient interaction. “I like art and I was always artistic and liked to do things with my hands, so I chose surgery,” says Duda, who went on to get her medical degree from University of Miami’s School of Medicine and open her own practice. “I thought plastic surgery was a positive field” with cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. “I like what I do,” says Duda. “I like getting up in the morning. I like coming to my office and I like my patients. My patients have been loyal. I’ve had the same ones for 20 years and they are going to keep coming back for new treatments and whatever else they need to help themselves.”

Always fascinated by biology, Gartside majored in it in college before getting her medical degree at Temple University. She gravitated to medicine because her mother was a nurse and discovered she had a knack for surgery. “I think that is important,” she says. “You can always say ‘Yes. I want to help people,’ but you can help people and not be happy doing it. I’m helping people, but I am doing something that I am happy doing.” Her favorite part of helping her patients is hearing their comments after surgery like, “This is how I always should have been,” or “I should have done this years ago.”
“Just hearing how patients are happy with their transformations is the best thing to hear,” Gartside says. “You feel good when they tell you that.”
