The thought of changing some of our beauty products when it starts to get chilly outside can seem inconvenient, but at times we completely forget that our skin can suffer from the colder temperatures as we get closer to winter. Emilie Davidson Hoyt, founder and CEO of LATHER, thoroughly explains the importance of changing our beauty regimen during those colder months as a preemptive measure and to benefit our skin in the long run. “During these months, it is important to protect our skin from the potential negative effects of the outdoor and indoor environments, as irritation accelerates skin aging,” explains Davidson Hoyt.
For the Face
If you have combination and dry skin, Davidson Hoyt says to steer clear of foaming cleansers, especially those that have sulfates, as they can be very damaging to these particular skin types. Instead, she recommends using creamy cleansers or cleansing oils like her Chia Seed and Passion Fruit Cleansing Oil and Cucumber Milk Facial Cleanser. As for the most essential product within our routines, moisturizer, she points out: “It’s always a good idea to transition to a richer moisturizer during the day on your whole face—perhaps one that you like to use at night during the warmer season.” Her moisturizer product recommendations for combination and dry skin include the Sweet Almond Face Moisturizer for combination skin, the AHA Facial Therapy with Copper & Borage Extract for dry skin and the Honey Moisture Mask for both skin types.
For people with oily skin, a daily beauty routine can be well-balanced by adding oil-free formulas and serums to help maintain the skin’s moisture without overdoing it. Davidson Hoyt’s recommendations include Moisture Magnet and Vitamin C Peptide Renewal. “Don’t wash your skin more than twice daily during the dry winter season, and use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that won’t strip and irritate skin,” explains Davidson Hoyt. She also recommends using serums containing glycerin, hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate. Davidson Hoyt’s recommendations for oily skin include the Moisture Magnet, Vitamin C Peptide Renewal, Ultra Mild Face Wash and Ultra Light Face Lotion.
For the Body
We can’t just focus on the face and forget about the rest when considering moisturizing treatments that will keep our skin looking young during those cold months. For instance, as Davidson Hoyt explains, exfoliating the skin can serve as a type of renewal. “It removes dry, flaky skin from the skin’s surface and maximizes the absorption of your serums and moisturizers so that they can work to their fullest potential,” she says. She recommends using cream- or oil-based scrubs during the coming months, as well as the Almond Crème Body Buff, Yuzu Sugar Cane Body Buff and the Sweet Almond Exfoliating Crème.
Switch out your summer body lotion for one with a richer texture and formula. Davidson Hoyt recommends looking for lotions that contain “high levels of emollient botanical butters and oils” like the Almond, Milk & Honey Body Butter, Manuka Honey Body Butter or the Bamboo Crème Moisturizer. And don’t forget about preventing chapped lips—the Vanilla & Argan Lip Scrub will keep your lips moisturized.
