Book a Springtime Escape in the Appalachian Mountains of Hardy County, West Virginia

Travel to the other side of the mountains to find a relaxing Appalachian escape. Our hills and hollers offer a one-of-a-kind respite; there’s a reason we’re called Almost Heaven.

The holiday season has passed, and temperatures have plummeted, so what’s the next best thing to look forward to? A spring getaway, perhaps? What better way to beat the winter doldrums than by planning a luxuriously long weekend away for you and your family or a special someone to look forward to through the long, cold months. Spring springs early in Hardy County, West Virginia, and we’ve got the perfect weekend plans for you!

Finding lodging with a location central to everything the region has to offer has never been easier. Every corner of the county has something to fit any budget or group, from tiny cabins and hotel and motel rooms to luxury accommodations for corporate events or large family gatherings. In addition to 150 Airbnb and VRBO rentals, a few other options include the cabins at Lost River State Park, award-winning stays such as the Guesthouse Lost River, and even a quaint, modern motel, the Firefly Inn.

And if you have to check a few emails while you’re here, we’ve got you covered. The whole county has fiber optic, high-speed Wi-Fi, so most places you stay, it’ll be up to you if you want to kick back and unplug — or not!

You never have to leave your cabin if you don’t want to (and we wouldn’t blame you). But if you decide to venture out, we have hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails for the outdoors lovers in Lost River State Park and the George Washington National Forest. Or, if shopping is more your speed, there are charming vintage, artisan, antique, and convenience shops — many of which are a modern take on general stores that offer both goods you might need for your weekend as well as unique West Virginia–made souvenirs.

And if you’re determined to work off those extra holiday calories, sign up for the Lost River State Park Trail Run on May 3! This annual event has several routes and distances throughout the park to choose from and is sponsored by the Lost River Trail Coalition.

For those looking for a more leisurely escape, if the sight of verdant acres, rolling hills speckled with black and brown cows, and never-ending mountain peaks sprinkled with dogwood and redbud trees makes you smile, then simply taking a drive will be a breathtaking experience.

Coming to the country doesn’t mean leaving good food behind either. Whether you’re in the mood for fine dining — such as at the Guesthouse, our 2024 Regional Award winner for Best Fine Dining — or a mouthwatering pizza from the state’s 2024 West Virginia’s Best New Restaurant winner, Lost and Found Pizza and Provisions, there’s an option for any appetite. Swing by one of the many farmers markets for local produce — or a fresh cinnamon roll from Wardensville Garden Market, a local favorite!

Come spend a weekend with us and see how Hardy County, West Virginia, might just become your favorite getaway. We’re pretty sure it will become your next home away from home.
