Hunger is often invisible, but it’s happening right here in our community. Northern Virginia Food Rescue (NOVA-FR) is on a mission to change that. Every day, NOVA-FR rescues perfectly good food that would otherwise be thrown away — food from restaurants, grocery stores, and retailers — and ensures it gets to families in need. This isn’t just about reducing waste; it’s about saving lives. Shockingly, 40 percent of food in the U.S. is wasted, yet 1 in 4 people in our nation face hunger. Here in Prince William County, 36 percent of the population struggles with food insecurity. That’s more than one in three people who aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from.

For children, the reality is even more heartbreaking. Even in a county where every school offers free lunch to all students, kids are still at risk of going hungry on weekends, during holidays, and over long breaks when school meals aren’t available. NOVA-FR steps in with its Backpack Program to fill this gap, ensuring that families can put food on the table even when school is out.

Hunger is a scary reality, but together, we can change it. You can help by joining us at the “Hunger Is Scary” Fundraiser on October 19 at NOVA-FR’s warehouse in Manassas, Virginia. It’s more than just a Halloween party with costumes, dancing, food, music, and drinks — it’s an opportunity to make a real difference. Your attendance shows you care about improving food access and are ready to act.

By supporting NOVA-FR, you’re joining a community of people committed to making sure no one in Northern Virginia has to face the fear of hunger. Let’s work together to ensure that everyone has enough to eat. We can’t do it without you.
Join us, because hunger is scary — but doing nothing is even scarier.
