Designing Dreams: Inside a Centreville Home’s Kitchen Transformation from Cluttered to Culinary Success

This kitchen went from drab to fab with the help of Cynthia Murphy and Murphy’s Design, Inc.

This 1990s Centreville home was long overdue for a kitchen makeover. The outdated and cramped layout made daily use a hassle. After checking in with friends and family members and hearing their remodeling regrets they were determined not to repeat the mistakes of others.

Step one: the homeowners embarked on a search for a seasoned project designer to lead their kitchen transformation from concept to completion.

They chose Cynthia Murphy, CKBR of Murphy’s Design, Inc., who advocates a distinct approach to kitchen remodeling. Unlike the typical route of hiring a contractor first — which can lead to cost overruns and subpar quality — Cynthia recommends a project development framework. This strategy allows homeowners to make informed decisions, manage costs effectively, and explore multiple problem-solving solutions.

“Starting with labor costs often means forgoing the time to really work through your decisions. This can lead to spending more than necessary,” Cynthia advises. Instead, her framework integrates design, product selection, and solution-based goals to streamline planning and cut unnecessary costs.

Heeding Cynthia’s guidance, the homeowners, Christine and Andrew, focused on their needs and pragmatic considerations. Christine’s passion for cooking influenced most design decisions, while Andrew ensured all purchases were durable and timeless. They avoided expensive structural changes by optimizing the existing space, which included adding extensive organized storage and state-of-the-art appliances.

Significant enhancements included replacing an old laundry area adjacent to the kitchen with a large pantry area — 5 feet wide by 8 feet high. They also installed a second sink near the former laundry’s water connections to facilitate a new coffee station and bar, keeping the main cooking area clear during busy times.

The kitchen now features two large islands: one dedicated to meal prep with ample storage for small appliances and cooking tools, and the other acting as a transitional space to the family room — offering additional pantry storage and seating for guests to perch and watch as Christine operates the kitchen.

“Transforming a kitchen is more than beautifying, it’s taking a room that’s not functioning well, peeling it back like an onion, and turning it into a functional haven with organized storage, top-quality equipment, and striking design – all achieved by following a systematic approach in collaboration with the homeowner,” Cynthia explains.

Murphy’s Design offers its exclusive project development service both in-person and virtually, ensuring that all homeowners have access to top-tier design and planning support.

Christine’s satisfaction speaks volumes about their approach, stating, “This was a complete kitchen remodeling success story. I love my kitchen more every day and wouldn’t change a thing!”
