The number of wineries in the Charlottesville area has grown from a handful over the past few decades. Soil, climate, and a passion for creating high-quality wine have led to an explosion in the wine scene in Charlottesville and Albemarle County since the 1990s. Thomas Jefferson envisioned the Charlottesville area as a place dotted with vineyards and even attempted to grow grapes and produce wine; however, his experiment was not successful.

Hundreds of years later, this area is home to the Monticello Wine Trail, which includes 40-plus wineries, each with their own unique personality and story to share. All within 25 miles of Charlottesville, this active group of wineries produces wines of national and international acclaim. The Monticello Wine Trail Passport makes it easy to find wineries and track your visits. A special wine glass will be waiting for you at the 10th winery you visit!
