Driver Who Landed on Metro Tracks Charged with Reckless Driving

The man was treated with non-life-threatening injuries after his car ended up on the tracks near Dunn Loring.

By Emily Perez February 11, 2026 at 2:40 pm

A driver was injured after his car flew from I-66 onto Metro’s Orange Line tracks near the Dunn Loring station. According to Virginia State Police, the driver reached down to grab his EZ Pass and ran off the left side of the road. He hit a mound of snow and ice, and his car launched onto the neighboring Metro tracks.

Crews were dispatched just before 11:30 a.m. after reports that a vehicle had gone off the westbound side of I-66 near the Cedar Lane overpass. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has been charged with reckless driving.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue stated that officials were on the scene addressing an “unauthorized vehicle on the tracks” according to a post on X. The car caught on fire, and FCFRD put it out.

The incident caused delays on I-66 and Metro’s Orange Line on Wednesday afternoon. Metro Transit Police and fire personnel closed the impacted stretch of track so crews could lift the vehicle off the tracks and onto the westbound HOV Lanes on I-66, which were shut down.

Orange line trains were single tracking between Vienna and West Falls Church, causing expected delays in both directions. Full service has now been restored.
