VDOT Announces Weekend Lane Closures on I-495 near Tysons

Plan ahead for alternative routes to avoid traffic backups and delays.

By Debbie Williams November 7, 2025 at 10:24 am

If you’re planning a trip along I-495’s inner or outer loop this weekend — or next — take note. A single lane will be closed in both directions on I-495 in the Tysons-McLean area.

Crews will close lanes between the Dulles Corridor Interchange and American Legion Memorial Bridge on Saturday, November 8; Saturday, November 15; and Sunday, November 16. The closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.

The lane closures are needed for crews to complete paving work for VDOT’s I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension project.

Additional Ongoing Closures

Multi-lane closures in the north and southbound directions on I-495 and ramp closures with detours will continue nightly through mid-November. These nightly lane closures include:

  • Single lane closures will begin at 9 p.m., with up to three lanes closed by 10 p.m. each night.
  • Ramp closures will begin as early as 9 p.m. and continue until 5 a.m. the following morning. These closures will be staggered and reopened as work is completed.
  • All lanes will be reopened by 5 a.m. on weekday mornings.

In addition to paving work, crews will be installing lane markings and flex-posts separating the express lanes from the general-purpose lanes. They are also finishing other necessary work before the new express lanes open at the end of the month.

VDOT advises drivers to avoid the construction area and use alternate routes. Traffic, work zone, and incident information is available online at 511.vdot.virginia.gov, via the free mobile 511Virginia app, or by calling 511 in Virginia at any time. VDOT also posts the latest construction and lane closure news at 495next.vdot.virginia.gov.
