Abigail Spanberger Elected Governor of Virginia

Democratic candidates swept the commonwealth’s top offices.

By Debbie Williams November 5, 2025 at 8:41 am

In a historic election, Democrat Abigail Spanberger defeated Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears to become Virginia’s first woman governor-elect. Democrat candidates swept other key state races as well.

Democrat Ghazala Hashmi was elected Virginia’s lieutenant governor, the office currently held by Earle-Sears. Hashmi made history herself as the first Muslim woman elected in a statewide race. Democrat Jay Jones defeated incumbent Republican Jason Miyares in the race for Virginia’s attorney general.

Spanberger’s Background

Virginia-raised Spanberger, 46, graduated from the University of Virginia and received an MBA through a dual-degree program between Purdue University and GISMA Business School in Germany.

After college, Spanberger worked with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service on federal narcotics and money-laundering cases, collaborating with law enforcement to investigate child predators. She later joined the Central Intelligence Agency as a case officer, working undercover to track transnational criminal organizations, prevent terrorist attacks, and counter nuclear proliferation. After moving to the private sector, Spanberger was elected to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House from 2019 to 2025.

Spanberger and her husband, Adam, have three daughters — Claire, Charlotte, and Catherine — who are enrolled in Virginia public schools in the Henrico County area.

“Service to our communities, to our country, and to our Commonwealth was instilled in me at an early age,” she told Northern Virginia Magazine. “I was raised with the understanding that if you see something wrong, you do everything in your power to fix it. I ran for Congress because, at the time, my representative voted to eliminate health care coverage for people like my neighbors.”

Spanberger will become the state’s 75th governor, succeeding Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin.
