Fairfax County Residents: Don’t Forget to Head to the Polls and Vote Tuesday

Voting is underway to fill the vacant 11th Congressional District seat.

By Debbie Williams September 9, 2025 at 10:56 am

Tuesday is a special election day in Fairfax County. Residents are voting for a new representative for Virginia’s 11th Congressional District; polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The ballot includes Democratic candidate James R. Walkinshaw and Republican candidate Stewart L. Whitson. The seat was vacated by Gerry Connolly, who died on May 21. The district covers most of Fairfax County and the entirety of Fairfax City.

Same-Day Voter Registration

If you have not registered to vote, you can still register and vote at your polling place. Residents should bring a valid photo ID, or they can fill out an ID confirmation form and still cast a regular ballot. Valid IDs include a Virginia driver’s license (even expired), U.S. passport, utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or a government document with your name and current address.

Mail-In Ballots and Curbside Voting

Mail ballots can be returned at any polling place within the 11th Congressional District Tuesday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. They can also be placed in the 24/7 drop box at the Fairfax County Government Center until 7 p.m.

If mailed, ballots must be postmarked by September 9 and received by noon on Friday, September 12. You can track your ballot at fairfaxco.ballottrax.net/voter or check your ballot status at ballot.elections.virginia.gov.

Ballots and voting materials are available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Korean. For voters with disabilities or mobility needs, curbside voting, ballot-marking devices, and other accommodations are available. For more information, visit fairfaxcounty.gov/elections or call 703-222-0776.
