A Safety Service Patrol worker was killed in a fatal crash on I-95 Saturday night while helping a driver whose car was disabled. Virginia State Police are now investigating the crash.
Just before 8 p.m. on September 6, the Safety Service Patrol member, contracted by the Virginia Department of Transportation, was assisting a disabled Audi. The vehicle was on the shoulder of I-95 northbound, near mile-marker 151 near Dumfries. A Chrysler 300 Sedan lost control, crossed all lanes of traffic, and struck the patroller and the Audi driver, Virginia State Police said.
The patroller was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. The driver of the Audi had serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Charges are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
Safety Service Patrol is a free safety service that assists with emergencies along 1,062 interstate miles in Virginia. It helps with tire change assistance, providing fuel to get to the nearest gas station, jump starts, and other emergency assistance to motorists.
In Virginia, drivers are required to move over and slow down for any emergency vehicles with flashing lights, including law enforcement, EMS, fire, highway maintenance, and disabled vehicles.
