With peak feel-like temperatures (heat index) topping over 100 on Thursday, July 17, Fairfax County has once again activated its heat plan. Cooling centers around the county will be available during normal operating hours for individuals needing relief from the heat.

These cooling centers will also have supplies available including bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellant and body wipes. Centers include libraries, community centers, rec centers, human services regional offices, and homeless shelters (available for people experiencing homelessness).

During extreme heat, facilities may have unexpected closures due to HVAC issues. The county suggests you verify that the location is open before visiting.

Fairfax County also distributes supplies through outreach workers and other partners who go out into the community to check on unsheltered residents. Supplies are also available at shelters, drop-in centers, and meal sites.

And the county says cooling centers are open throughout the summer during normal operating hours for anyone to use, whether or not the heat plan has been activated or not.

To stay safe during the extreme heat, Fairfax County also recommends these precautions:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool.
  • Check on elderly or vulnerable individuals who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures can quickly become dangerously hot inside.

In Arlington, all parks and recreation and partner outdoor programming (including league practices and games) at outdoor facilities from 12:30 to 5 p.m. will be moved to indoor locations. The county will communicate directly via email to participants about any changes to programs at community centers, parks, or facilities. The county will also email or call about summer camp relocations, early closings, or cancellations.
