If you’re driving in a construction zone along the Fairfax County Parkway, it would be wise to slow down.
The county has lowered the speed limit along Fairfax County Parkway between I-66 and Route 123 to 45 mph. And speed cameras have been installed between Popes Head Road and Burke Center Parkway. The changes are part of VDOT’s ongoing road-widening project in the area.
The speed camera initiative in this zone begins with a 30-day notice period. Driver will begin receiving warning citations starting June 15. Then, beginning on July 15, violators will be subject to fines of up to $100. The citations will be sent via mail.
Beginning July 15, the fines will be as follows:
- $50 for 10 to 14 mph over the limit
- $75 for 15 to 19 mph over the limit
- $100 for 20 mph or more over the limit
Current plans also include live speed enforcement in the area for 60 days. But it may be extended as construction continues.
Fairfax County says the goal of the cameras “is to change the behavior of drivers and make our roads safer. Speed cameras in work zones will improve the safety of our roads by protecting construction personnel and slowing down motorists, especially around these congested and vulnerable locations.”
