The Search Is Off: Police Locate Missing Plane Door

Police have recovered the cockpit door to a small plane that ripped off mid-flight this weekend. The plane door landed in a farm field near Purcellville, Virginia State Police say.

At around 9 a.m. Saturday, the two-seater aircraft experienced a mechanical failure that caused its door to tear off while in flight over the Round Hill area. The pilot, Daniel O’Brien, safely landed the plane at Leesburg Executive Airport.

Virginia State Police and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office then began a search for the plane door, which they said was white with maroon markings and about 3.5 feet long by 2.5 feet wide. They urged the public not to touch the door if they found it.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.
