The lottery for the National Christmas Tree lighting is officially open, and you have a week to enter for a chance to attend one of DC’s most cherished holiday events.
From now until 3 p.m. on October 30, you can apply for free tickets to witness the annual lighting at President’s Park on December 5. The National Park Service said you may also call 877-444-6777 to enter.
Lottery results will be announced on November 8.
Tickets are limited to five per household. Every attendee, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Only one application is allowed per household. You will need to register online or by phone. Double check that your contact information is correct, as email will be used for all lottery and ticket communications.
The National Christmas Tree lighting began in 1923 when President Calvin Coolidge lit the first tree on Christmas Eve.
Over 100 years later, this tradition continues with musical performances and special guests celebrating the start of the holiday season.
The ceremony is usually televised. This year’s performers have not been announced.
In 2023, a 40-foot Norway spruce from West Virginia was used, marking the first partnership between the National Park Service and USDA Forest Service.
Throughout December, visitors can view the National Christmas Tree along with 58 smaller trees representing the states, territories, and DC. The trees, with student-designed ornaments, are located on the Ellipse.
