The City of Fairfax has claimed the title of “Most Fit Community” for the first time in the annual Mayors’ Fitness Challenge. The friendly competition between Fairfax, Falls Church, and Vienna concluded this week, with Fairfax on top.
“We are thrilled to announce Fairfax City has officially won the Mayors’ Fitness Challenge this year,” Fairfax City Parks and Recreation posted on Facebook. “A huge thank you to everyone who participated, and to our fellow competitors, the Town of Vienna and the City of Falls Church!”
The contest began on March 16. To win, participants in each locality logged their fitness activities for two months. Activity could be anything from swimming to running to football.
After what Vienna called a “strong, 11th-hour finish,” Fairfax residents accumulated the most time spent exercising, with an average total of 3,960.69 minutes per participant. Vienna followed up with 2,243.27 minutes, then Falls Church came in third place with 1,863.83 minutes.
This event began in 2021 when the mayors of each town “rallied residents to choose activities they enjoy and to get moving in the name of community spirit and hometown pride,” according to a news release from Vienna.
While this win upsets Vienna’s two-year winning streak, Vienna says it still saw record numbers this year with 254 participants.
