Is Abigail Spanberger Ready to Run for Virginia Governor?

A departure by Rep. Abigail Spanberger would set up a competitive race in the 7th Congressional District.

By Colleen Kelleher July 28, 2023 at 3:30 pm

Rep. Abigail Spanberger may be ready to run for governor of Virginia. The Democrat has told multiple people she plans to run in 2025, Politico reports.

Spanberger, who represents Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, is a moderate. She was first elected in 2018 and serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Agriculture Committee.

Her possible departure in the House of Representatives has Republicans eyeing the seat that includes a large swath of Northern Virginia, including Prince William, Stafford, and Spotsylvania counties, the Washington Examiner reports. All 435 House seats will be up for grabs in 2024, and Spanberger’s is considered one of the most competitive.

According to Politico, four people familiar with Spanberger’s plans said she is preparing for a run when current Gov. Glenn Youngkin leaves office. A formal announcement is not likely until after the November state elections.

Others said to be considering a run for the governor’s office are Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn who is not seeking reelection and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney.
