Metro will open its newest rail station, Potomac Yard, in Alexandria on May 19, the transit agency said.
Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke and Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson made the announcement Wednesday during a tour of the Potomac Yard site.
The station, on the Blue and Yellow lines, is located between the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road stations. It will be Metro’s 98th station.
“This station opens a multitude of possibilities for those who live and work in Alexandria by providing a gateway to the region and all the city has to offer,” said Clarke, in a news release.
A station at Potomac Yard has been talked about for decades.
“Bringing Metro to Potomac Yard has been Alexandria’s most significant economic development, transportation and climate initiative. While not always easy, the opening of this station is a monumental achievement for the City, WMATA, and its contractors. But more importantly, this station is the legacy of a legion of Alexandrians who never gave up the dream,” said Wilson.
Word of the opening of the station comes after the transit agency said the Yellow Line, which has been shut down since September, will reopen May 7. The line has been closed to repair the decades-old bridge and tunnel between the Pentagon and L’Enfant Plaza.
The new station will be one of the first in North America to receive Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, Metro said.
