The teen driver who died in a deadly Fairfax Station crash earlier this month was driving more than 100 mph and went airborne, according to Fairfax County police.
“After reviewing the evidence from the crash and the vehicle’s airbag control module, detectives determined the Lexus was traveling 100.7 miles per hour before the crash,” the police department said in an updated news release about the crash that killed two teenage girls and hospitalized a third teen on January 10.
At around 9:30 p.m. that night, police say the car left the road and “came to rest on its roof” after cresting a hill on Lee Chapel Road.
The driver and a backseat passenger, who was not buckled up, died at the scene.
The police initially said that speed was a factor. They have now determined the 2019 Lexus IS350 went airborne for about 130 feet.
The passenger who survived remains hospitalized, police said on Wednesday.
Detectives continue to investigate the crash.
