Tim Kaine to seek 3rd Senate term

Tim Kaine, Virginia’s former governor, has been in politics in Virginia since 1994.

By Colleen Kelleher January 20, 2023 at 12:31 pm

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine has decided to seek a third term in 2024.

“I’m a servant. I love Virginia. I’m proud of what I have done. I got a whole lot more I want to do,” said Kaine during a Friday morning news conference in Richmond.

“I was raised by parents who really taught me to be happy if you do something good for others.”

Watch Kaine’s announcement:

Kaine, 64, said he grappled with the decision to run because it’s an eight-year decision — two years of running and six years in office.

Kaine, a Democrat elected to the Senate from Virginia in 2012, has been a fixture in Virginia politics since the 1990s. He first served on the Richmond City Council before becoming the city’s mayor and then going on to become Virginia’s lieutenant governor and then governor. Kaine also was Hillary Clinton’s running mate in 2016.

In the Senate, Kaine currently serves on the following committees: Armed Services; Budget; Foreign Relations; and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committees, according to a biography on his Senate website.
