20-Year-Old Charged in Dumfries Shooting That Killed Child, Wounded 4

A 3-year-old girl was killed in the shooting at a residence on Wednesday.

Four Prince William County teens remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a shooting at a Dumfries home Wednesday that left one child dead.

The teens, between the ages of 14 and 17, were at the residence when 20-year-old Kenyatta Lee Oglesby allegedly opened fire. Oglesby was reportedly in a relationship with a 17-year-old female victim who was shot multiple times. Journee Carroll-Ward, 3, was killed during the altercation.

Security camera footage from a neighboring residence reportedly depicts one of the victims, believed to be the 17-year-old acquaintance of Oglesby, running outside the house and screaming as a hail of gunfire erupts.

Concerned neighbors called police and converged on the scene to assist the wounded teen.

“I just couldn’t fathom that,” neighbor Sharon Garrett told NBC 4. “It was bad. It was bad to look at. There was blood everywhere.”

Garrett told NBC 4 that the teen, who had been shot at least twice, mentioned that it was her boyfriend who fired the weapon.

Police discovered four additional victims inside the home’s basement, where officers “provided immediate first aid until fire [and] rescue services were cleared to safely enter the home,” a police report stated.

“One of the victims, a young child, was pronounced dead at the scene,” the report said. “The four other victims … were transported to area hospitals with serious, life-threatening injuries.”

Each of the hospitalized teens is reportedly related to the 3-year-old victim, authorities stated. They are currently awake and stable but remain in critical condition. A fifth teen, who is reportedly deaf, slept through the incident, according to NBC 4. The 3-year-old victim’s mother reportedly died last year.

Police immediately identified Oglesby as a person of interest, the report said. He was located shortly after the shooting at a nearby location off of Richmond Highway, where he was detained without incident. Once in custody, Oglesby “became uncooperative with investigators as to what led up to the shooting,” the police report stated.

Responding officers recovered two firearms during the investigation, but have yet to confirm whether they were used in the shooting.

Oglesby has been charged with one count of murder, four counts of aggravated malicious wounding and five counts of using a firearm in commission of a felony.

He has a prior record after previously pleading guilty to a charge of carrying a firearm without a license, NBC 4 reported.

He is currently being held without bond. A court date is pending.
