The Alexandria Police Department announced Monday that a grand jury has returned an indictment of first degree murder against 33-year-old Rakibul Islam Fakir. The charge is punishable by life in prison. Fakir is now being held in William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center without bail.
The stabbing that led to the indictment occurred at the B.J.’s Wholesale Outlet on S. Van Dorn Street on September 25, 2021. Police were called to the store around 7:45 p.m., a Saturday, after 29-year-old Maryland resident Abiy Zemene was found suffering from stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fakir was arrested at the B.J.’s. Fakir’s family says he and Zemene were long-time friends. Alexandria police will not discuss the case prior to the trial.
