The previously named Washington Redskins will now be called the Washington Football team, for the time being. The change comes less than two weeks after the team announced they retired their team name and logo.
In a statement released by the team, they said, “For updated brand clarity and consistency purposes, we will call ourselves the ‘Washington Football Team’ pending adoption of our new name. The Redskins name and logo will officially be retired by the start of the 2020 season.”
The organization is looking to retire all branding of the former team name before the first home game of the season on Sunday, Sept. 13 against the Philadelphia Eagles. This includes changes to the jerseys and helmets, FedEx Field, the training facility and the brand’s digital accounts.

The team has already made the change to their social media username, changing Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts to @WashingtonNFL.
While the decision on a final team name is still being discussed, franchise leadership will continue to listen to fans, players, alumni and sponsors for input on the future of the organization.
