On Tuesday, March 3, registered voters in Virginia will make their way to the polls for the most important day in the primary race thus far: Super Tuesday.
While millions of people across the nation have already voted early or by mail-in ballot, residents have the chance to cast a vote tomorrow, selecting one individual from a field of Democratic candidates running against President Donald Trump. Of the 14 states and one territory hosting primaries or caucuses, Virginia has 99 delegates, which is the fourth most of all participating areas.

Who is on the ballot?
As of press time, there are just five Democratic candidates left in the presidential race.

The state’s Republican Party has canceled its primary and selected President Trump as its candidate at the Republican National Convention.
Why does Super Tuesday matter?
This year, there will be more than 1,300 delegates allocated on Super Tuesday. When included with the 155 delegates from the four early voting states—Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina—about 40% of total delegates will have been awarded following Super Tuesday.
There are two types of delegates that can be awarded: statewide and district-level delegates. Here in Virginia, candidates must receive at least 15% of the vote statewide to receive statewide delegates, and also meet the 15% threshold in a congressional district to receive any district-level delegates.
While no Democratic candidate can win the nomination on Tuesday, the results of the vote tend to reveal a clear front-runner (or two) in the race. To secure the Democratic nomination, a candidate needs 1,991 delegates.
Who can vote?
Virginia’s primary is open, enabling registered voters of any party affiliation to cast a ballot for candidates in either the Democratic primary.
Where can I vote?
To find out exactly where you can go to cast your vote, you can look up your designated polling place on the Virginia Department of Election’s Citizen Portal by entering your voter information.
When will polls open?
Polls for the primary will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.
What do I need to vote?
The most important thing to know is that if you haven’t registered to vote at least 22 days prior to Election Day, you will not be eligible to vote in the primaries. If you have registered, you must arrive at the polls with a valid photo ID. Acceptable forms of ID are listed below.
- Virginia driver’s license
- Virginia DMV-issued photo ID
- United States passport
- Employer-issued photo ID
- Student photo ID issued by a school, college or university located in Virginia
- Other U.S.- or Virginia government-issued photo ID
- Tribal enrollment or other tribal photo ID
- Virginia Voter Photo ID card
