Alexandria businesses welcome Metro customers; Silver Line extension update

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Tuesday, Sept. 10.

By Editorial September 10, 2019 at 8:55 am

The Metro summer shutdown of six Blue and Yellow line stations ended yesterday, Sept. 9, and businesses in Alexandria are heaving a sigh of relief. The local businesses are eager to serve customers that will be traveling back through heavily commuted areas and certain locations are offering discounts to those that show their Metro pass. (WTOP)

In other Metro news, after recent reports from Metro’s inspector general about ongoing repairs on the Silver Line extension to Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County, WMATA is planning its exact changes in order to stay on track to launch the extension next summer. The biggest issues currently include several dozen switches, rocks that support the rail yard and faulty concrete panels. (WTOP)

The Fairfax-based VA-TF1/USA-1 Urban Search and Rescue team rescued two people on a remote island in The Bahamas this week, following the devastation and destruction from Hurricane Dorian. The team consists of 57 people and four canines and includes experts from the USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, as well as search and rescue teams from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. Another kid-friendly activity location is coming to Potomac Mills. This time it’s ZavaZone, a combination of ropes courses, ninja courses, trampolines, climbing challenges and more. The location is set to open in 2020 and will be approximately 21,000 square feet, open to all ages. Potomac Mills will also be opening a Round1 location, a growing chain of entertainment centers for families. (Inside NoVA)
