Metro summer shutdown ends; Amazon plans Arlington job fair

The 100-day-long Metro summer shutdown concludes today, Sept. 9. Six Virginia stations reopened on the Blue and Yellow lines, including Braddock Road, King Street-Old Town, Eisenhower Avenue, Huntington, Van Dorn and Franconia-Springfield this morning. Amazon, Inc. is looking to hire 30,000 workers by early next year. The company is in search of software engineers, warehouse staff and more, and all offered positions will be full-time with benefits. Amazon announced that it will host six national job fairs, with one in Arlington, as well as Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, Tennessee and Seattle. (WTOP)

A $1 million Powerball ticket sold in Front Royal, according to Virginia Lottery officials. The ticket was purchased at Shenandoah Farms Grocery at 3 Blue Mountain Road, and the winning numbers for the Sept. 4 Powerball drawing were 4-8-30-52-59, with a Powerball of 2. The owner of the ticket has 180 days to claim the prize. (Inside NoVA)

Jennifer Rodgers, a social sciences and global studies teacher at Dominion High School in Sterling, was awarded and named the Region 4 Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Department of Education last week. Rodgers is one of eight teachers who could be named Virginia Teacher of the Year. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)
