Arlington assesses flood damage; Metro fare evasion could be costing up to $36 million

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Wednesday, July 10.

By Editorial July 10, 2019 at 8:30 am

Flash flooding on Monday, July 8, has caused $3.5 million in damage to county property in Arlington, specifically bridges and local parks. Several pedestrian bridges have been washed away entirely, and public restrooms, playgrounds and picnic areas have also sustained damage. (WTOP)

According to WMATA’s most recent quarterly budget report, Metro is losing an estimated $36 million in revenue each year to do fare evasion, the act of jumping turnstiles or refusing to pay bus fare. The organization says that lost revenue could have been used for new improvements and ultimately affects federal funding. (WUSA9)

The Washington Monument will host a one-of-a-kind celebration in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing on the moon. The event, which is overseen by the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, will feature a projection of a full-sized, 363-foot Saturn V rocket on the monument for three nights. (Inside NoVA)

Two storefronts in Alexandria will be temporary homes for Virginia Tech University’s innovation campus. The university is seeking a special permit to open a portion of its new campus (a $1 billion investment overall) in a former Dressbarn and current Rack Room Shoes storefront in Potomac Yard. (WTOP)
