DC experiences historic flash flooding; Road closures continue in NoVA

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Tuesday, July 9.

By Editorial July 9, 2019 at 8:44 am

Washington, DC saw one of its most historic floods ever on Monday, as roughly 3.5 inches fell within two hours. Flooding stranded drivers in their cars, leaked heavily into metro stations and even soaked the basement of the White House. (NBC Washington)

Flooding across the Northern Virginia region has led to road closures, with several roads permanently damaged, blocked by downed trees or still retaining high water levels. At 3700 Prosperity Avenue, the road was washed out entirely and will take a minimum of two days to repair. Find more closures here. (WUSA9)

NOVA Parks is preparing for an upcoming year of improvements and new additions to local parks. The organization is planning to build a greenhouse or orangery at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, north of Vienna. Other additions at various locations include a ropes course and more trails. (Inside NoVA)

There’s a new reason to clap at the Smithsonian National Zoo—a California sea lion pup was born on June 23, and based on observation, has had healthy behaviors through nursing, moving and vocalizing. The pup will be progressively introduced to other sea lions at the zoo and could make his public debut later this summer. (Inside NoVA)
