New VA laws go into effect today; Fourth of July road closures

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Monday, July 1.

A list of new laws will go into effect in Virginia today, July 1, ranging from transportation and education to animals and family. The laws include tougher penalties on drivers, less restrictions on THC oil and an age increase for purchasing nicotine products. (WTOP)

Fourth of July celebrations on Thursday will cause road closures in Arlington. Most will be late in the evening surrounding areas that are viewing locations for the National Mall fireworks show, as well as holiday events that are expected to gather large crowds and subsequent traffic. (ARL Now)

Airbus Americas is set to invest more than $10 million to move the company’s warehouse, which is now located in Ashburn, to a new 250,000-square-foot facility in Dulles. The company invested $1 million back in 2016 to expand but it has already outgrown the space. (WTOP)

Focused on the history of five locations in Loudoun County, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority has created the 1863 Fund, an endowment dedicated to the preservation of the Civil War sites. Locations include Mount Defiance Historic Park, Mount Zion Historic Church and Gilbert’s Corner Regional Park. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)
