1‘The Tempest’
The Aquila Theatre performs Shakespeare’s final play at GMU’s Center for the Arts. Thought to be Shakespeare’s semi-autobiographical work, the play follows the magical Prospero and his daughter, whose encounters with shipwrecked passengers fuel the drama. The New Yorker says Aquila Theatre is “crystalline in effect.” / Jan. 23

3New Year’s Day 5K

The acclaimed African vocalist, percussionist and dancer performs at Wolf Trap for one night only. Known for her Grammy Award-winning performance in “Pearls” with India.Arie, BBC describes Gnahoré’s vocals as “persuasively innocent” and her music as sometimes “upbeat, rhythmic [and] dance-fuelled,” other times conveying “melancholia.” / Jan. 8
5The Capitol Steps
The Capitol Steps return to The Alden for an outrageous and hilarious performance. Founded by a band of former Senate staffers, this group puts satirical twists on politics today. MD Theatre Guide says, “You will never think of Congress or anyone else in the political field the same way.” / Jan. 3
