Put down your hammer and take off your tool belt.

Grab your tape measure instead and plan on attending the Capital Home Show at the Dulles Expo Center, being held Friday, Sept. 20 to Sunday, Sept. 22. Whether you’re looking to update an old bathroom or learn more about current interior design, the event is centered around how to improve your home in more ways than one.

Dozens of local and national exhibitors will be on-site to showcase the newest home technology (such as energy-efficient products, home security systems and top-of-the-line appliances), construction services (such as kitchen remodeling, architecture planning and window installments) and local decor items (including art and furniture made in NoVA).

Brett Tutor of TLC’s Trading Spaces, a series where two sets of neighbors “trade spaces,” for 48 hours and are offered $1,000 to design the home with the help of Tutor, will be on the main stage as the event’s keynote speaker. He is a trained carpenter and licensed professional in a variety of home-related systems. Other speakers are yet to be announced.

The event will also feature a Bathroom Wars competition, where two remodeling companies will compete to see who can create the best bathroom through style and functionality, and a Make It, Take It area where Kelly Millspaugh Thompson, owner of Stylish Pantina in Falls Church, will help attendees create their own decor by combining vintage items with modern design.

Look out for Metro Day, where attendees can use their Metro Bus Pass to get in for free, as well as Hero Day (honoring military personnel, veterans and all first responders with free admission), Trade Day (local home-related tradespeople receive free admission) and Federal Government Employee Day.

Attendees can also enter to win the national giveaway: a trip for two to meet Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs at the Minneapolis Home and Garden Show in February. // Dulles Expo Center: 4320 Chantilly Shopping Center, Chantilly; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; $10 adults, $3 child (ages 6-12)
