This year, the Northern Virginia chapter of the American Institute of Architects took its yearly celebration online, honoring 26 local projects at the annual Design Awards.
The celebration honored local design and architecture throughout the region. Categories included commercial interiors and historic, residential, institutional and commercial architecture. Each category featured various awards, including the Award of Excellence, Award of Merit and Jurors’ Citation.
This year’s jurors met over Zoom to review over 120 entries, eventually narrowing it down to the 26 winning projects.
During the virtual event, President Joseph McCoy said, “This annual program is a meaningful way for us to acknowledge the work of our peers and demonstrate outwardly the value of our profession and service to those who will live, work and play in the places we have envisioned.”
The list of winning designs from across the region includes the Tubman Elementary School by ISTUDIO Architects; The Washington Fish Market by Studio MB; Children’s National Hospital by HGA; and a Virginia farm house by Muse Architects. All of the winning projects can be seen on the chapter’s website.
While the Design Awards usually celebrate with a gala, this year the chapter brought the celebration online due to COVID-19. Those interested in watching the 2020 AIA Northern Virginia Design Awards can see the virtual celebration on the chapter’s YouTube page. The chapter has also posted videos about the jurors, their comments and other submissions.
